Discover your favourite
soundtracks with Apple TV+

Soundtrack Sync

About the project

Have you ever found yourself captivated by a movie soundtrack and tried to find it while still watching on your smartphone, only to realize it's nearly impossible? That moment when the music resonates deeply, but you’re left fumbling through apps, breaking the immersion...

Imagine if discovering that perfect soundtrack was as effortless as feeling the emotion it evokes - right at your fingertips.

The Challenge

Currently, users watching movies on Apple TV+ lack a seamless way to discover, identify, and save soundtracks in real-time. This disrupts their viewing experience by forcing them to rely on external apps like Shazam or Google Search, which interrupt immersion. For Apple TV+, this gap limits cross-platform engagement with Apple Music and impacts subscription growth and retention, leaving potential user needs unmet

The Goal

Specific: Integrate a seamless music discovery feature into Apple TV+ that allows users to identify and save soundtracks directly to Apple Music without disrupting their viewing experience.

Measurable: Achieve a 15% Conversion Rate within three months of launch, with a 15% increase in Usage Frequency (overall time spent on Apple Music).
Imagine if discovering that perfect soundtrack was as effortless as feeling the emotion it evokes - right at your fingertips.

My role

As the sole UX designer on this project, I led the entire UX design process from research to delivery, taking responsibility for:

- Conducting user research through interviews and behavioral analysis.
- Creating wireframes, prototypes, and mockups.
- Iterating based on user feedback and performance data.

Project metrics

Convertion Rate

A new, integrated feature could attract a substantial portion of users to switch to the Apple Music

Expected Increase

10 - 20 %

Usage Frequency

Users who engage with soundtracks may increase their overall time spent on Apple Music.

Expected Increase

10 - 15 %

Discover

In-Depth Interviews

To deeply understand user behavior and frustrations with music discovery while streaming, we conducted 10 in-depth interviews with participants aged 25-45. This group included regular users of Apple TV+, Apple Music. Interviews were conducted remotely via Zoom, lasting 45 minutes each, and were transcribed for analysis.
1. How often do you use streaming services to watch movies?
2. What devices do you mos frequently use to watch movies through streaming services?
5. Do you pay attention to soundtracks in the movies you watch?
6. Have you ever checked which songs were used in a movie you watched?
9. Do you ever listen to movie soundtracks in your free time?
Interruptions disrupt immersion: Users disliked having to pause movies or switch devices to find songs, as it took them out of the viewing experience.

“It’s annoying to stop everything just to identify one song.”

Affinity Diagram

To synthesize the findings from user interviews, I created an Affinity Diagram to identify key themes and pain points. Using tools like Miro, I grouped user quotes and observations into clear categories.

For example, one user noted, “I need to know the name of the song immediately without leaving the app,” emphasizing the need for seamless, non-intrusive solutions. By visually organizing user pain points and motivations, the Affinity Diagram provided a strong foundation for defining the problem space and prioritizing solutions.

Persona

Persona was created to capture the key behaviors, goals, and frustrations of users identified during the research phase. These profiles provided a clear understanding of user motivations and challenges, serving as a foundation for empathizing with their experiences.

Jobs To Be Done

when...

I am watching a movie on Apple TV+ and hearing a great song,

I want...

to instantly recognize and save the song,

so I can...

listen to it later on Apple Music.

To define user needs independently of specific solutions, I used the Jobs to Be Done framework.
This approach helped uncover the motivations and desired outcomes of users when interacting with streaming platforms and music discovery.

These jobs provided a user-centered framework that guided the ideation process and ensured the design addressed real-world needs, focusing on the outcomes users care about most.

Summary

In this phase I was able to:
- learn participants' pain points
- establish main goal of the project

Problem Statement

Sarah, a marketing manager in NYC, loves discovering new music while watching movies on her smartphone during her commute. However, she finds it frustrating that she can’t easily identify and save songs in real-time without interrupting her viewing experience. Sarah needs a seamless way to discover and save music from movies directly on her smartphone without breaking her immersion.

However, she finds it frustrating that she can’t easily identify and save songs in real-time without interrupting her viewing experience. Sarah needs a seamless way to discover and save music from movies directly on her smartphone without breaking her immersion.
Apple TV+ lacks an integrated music discovery feature, limiting cross-platform engagement with Apple Music. This gap reduces opportunities to drive subscription growth and retention by leveraging the ecosystem’s unique potential.

Customer Journey Map

The Customer Journey Map highlighted key pain points in Sarah’s experience with Apple TV+, specifically her frustration with music discovery. It provided clear insights into where satisfaction dropped, guiding the design of non-intrusive solutions to enhance user engagement

Soundtrack Search Engine

The Soundtrack Search Engine enables users to quickly find their favorite movie soundtracks through a dedicated "Music" tab in the search interface. By seamlessly filtering results to highlight soundtracks, this feature eliminates the need to sift through unrelated content. It addresses user frustrations with discovering music and simplifies the process by integrating it directly into the Apple TV+ platform.

Apple TV+ Music Library

The Soundtrack Library provides users with a comprehensive list of songs from a movie, complete with 30-second previews and a "Play Full Songs" option that links to Apple Music.

This feature empowers users to save or listen to soundtracks without leaving the Apple TV+ environment, resolving the pain point of having to switch between apps to find and enjoy music from their favorite films.

Soundtrack Overlay +
One-Tap Save

The Soundtrack Overlay allows users to instantly save a song to their Apple Music library with a single tap.

Notifications appear non-intrusively while watching, ensuring users can engage with music discovery without disrupting their movie experience.

The overlay also includes a full soundtrack list with timestamps, enabling users to revisit specific scenes tied to songs, creating a cohesive and engaging experience.
